California Tax Updates: Trump Accounts, California Competes Credit, and New EV Rebates

California Will Follow Federal Trump Account Rules

Under SB 180, California will generally conform to the federal tax treatment of Trump Accounts beginning with the 2026 tax year, retroactive to the start of that year.

In practical terms, this means account earnings generally will not be taxed while they remain in the account. Instead, tax is deferred until money is distributed. California will also follow certain federal exclusions for qualifying contributions, including employer contributions under IRC §128 and certain contributions from government entities or charitable organizations.

California Competes Tax Credit Extended

SB 180 also extends the California Competes Tax Credit for five additional years, keeping the program available through the 2034 tax year. California tax credit reciprocity rules play a significant role in enhancing the attractiveness of investment in California. Understanding how these rules interact with various state tax credits can provide businesses with strategic advantages. As companies look to the future, staying informed about these regulations will be crucial for maximizing their benefits. California hiring tax credit details are essential for businesses looking to make strategic decisions about their workforce. Utilizing this credit can significantly reduce labor costs and increase the overall appeal of expanding operations in the state. Companies should also consider how these incentives align with their long-term goals and workforce planning to fully leverage the benefits available.

This credit is administered by GO-Biz and is awarded through a competitive application process to encourage businesses to create jobs and invest in California. California LLC formation advantages can significantly benefit small businesses seeking to establish a presence in the state. By taking advantage of the favorable tax environment and streamlined processes, entrepreneurs can focus on growth and innovation. Additionally, these benefits can enhance the overall appeal of California as a destination for investors.

New EV Rebate for First-Time EV Buyers

California recently enacted a few updates that may matter to families, employers, businesses, and anyone considering buying an electric vehicle (EV).
SB 168 provides funding for a new instant rebate under California’s MyFirstEV program. The program is intended for California residents buying their first electric vehicle from a dealer.

As currently described:

  • Buyers of a qualifying new EV may be eligible for a rebate of up to $3,500, if the vehicle’s MSRP is $50,000 or less.
  • Buyers of an eligible used EV may be eligible for a rebate of up to $1,750, if the vehicle price is $25,000 or less.
  • The rebate is expected to be funded equally by the state and participating automakers.

The Governor’s office has indicated that the program is expected to launch later this summer. However, additional guidance is still pending, including whether the rebate will apply only to purchases made after the program officially begins.

What This Means for You

These updates may create planning opportunities, but the details matter:

  • Families using or considering Trump Accounts should note California’s upcoming conformity with federal tax treatment.
  • Businesses may have more time to evaluate whether the California Competes Tax Credit is worth pursuing.
  • First-time EV buyers should watch for final MyFirstEV guidance before assuming a purchase will qualify.

As always, eligibility and tax treatment depend on your specific facts. Please contact your tax advisor before making decisions based on these new rules.
