IRS Reopens Energy Credits Portal, Waives Deadline for 2024

For taxpayers to claim either a New Clean Vehicle Credit or the Previously-Owned Clean Vehicle Credit for the 2024 tax year, registered dealers had to submit IRS Form 15400, Clean Vehicle Seller’s Report, on its Energy Credits Online portal within 72 hours of the sale of a qualifying vehicle. The taxpayer and dealer must have a copy of the report in order to claim either of these credits on their tax return or transfer them to the dealer at the time of sale.

Many dealers failed to submit required IRS reports on time or at all, resulting in taxpayers being denied clean vehicle credits for buyers and advance payments for sellers.

The IRS has reopened the portal for dealers to submit 2024 Form 15400 and has waived the 72-hour deadline, according to a National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) alert. As of this writing, a final submission deadline is not yet known.

Taxpayers previously unable to claim the 2024 tax year clean vehicle credit due to missing Form 15400 should contact their dealer immediately to get the report while the submission portal is open.
