The Illinois Department of Revenue (DOR) provides an explanation on its upcoming tax amnesty program for the recently enacted legislation. The new legislation requires the DOR to establish an amnesty program to run from October 1, 2019 through November 15, 2019, which will apply to most taxes that it collects, including state corporate and personal income taxes and sales and use taxes. The program will cover taxes due from any taxable period ending after June 30, 2011 and prior to July 1, 2018. For taxpayers who participate in the amnesty program, they may potentially receive a waiver for all underlying interest and penalties, and the DOR generally will not seek civil or criminal prosecution of qualifying taxpayers for the period of time for which amnesty is granted.
